This is one of the first images that I made with a self-developed imprint technique. For this I make a cast of a body part in plaster which I then use to make an (3d) imprint in the clay. With this image I tried to leave an imprint in the clay of the the original as precisely as possible. It turned out to be a sympathetic portrait in which my near future seems tangible.
Looking back on it, this sculpture is dear to me because, in addition to pioneering in a new style, it also marked the beginning of the relationship with my wife Mirja.
The last handling on this statue was to hammer hard on the clay this particularly skullcap form appeared. The image bent deeper with each stroke. A beautiful parallel with the Catholic Church who is dealing with sexual abuse scandals , which they just could no longer deny. Every stroke the question again: do I have to bite more dust?
The skullcap is like a meteorite, with on the fault line a crown of thorns. For me, that crown symbolizes the struggle that man has with scientific knowledge.
Pinching and kneading in wax, I’m looking for a portrait that shows me something that interests me. When I reach a dead end I have to find a way out. In this case I squeezed the wax so hard that it poured out between my fingers. The somewhat dull head transformed into a prince, Prince Carnival, a dutch character, leader of the carnival celebrations. A prince in a world where it doesn’t matter who or what you are.
